Removal

NOTICE: During engine repair procedures, cleanliness is extremely important. Any foreign material, including any material created while cleaning gasket surfaces, that enters the oil passages, coolant passages or the oil pan, can cause engine failure.

NOTE: Removal steps in this procedure may contain installation details.

  1. Release the fuel system pressure.
    Refer to: Fuel System Pressure Release (310-00A Fuel System - General Information - 3.0L EcoBoost, General Procedures).
  1. Disconnect the battery ground cable.
    Refer to: Battery Disconnect and Connect (414-01 Battery, Mounting and Cables, General Procedures).
  1. Remove the following items:
    1. Cowl panel.
      Refer to: Cowl Panel (501-02 Front End Body Panels, Removal and Installation).
    2. Air cleaner.
      Refer to: Air Cleaner (303-12 Intake Air Distribution and Filtering - 3.0L EcoBoost/3.0L EcoBoost – Hybrid (BQ), Removal and Installation).
    3. RH and LH charge air cooler intake pipes.
      Refer to: Charge Air Cooler (CAC) Intake Pipe (303-12 Intake Air Distribution and Filtering - 3.0L EcoBoost/3.0L EcoBoost – Hybrid (BQ), Removal and Installation).
    4. High-Pressure Fuel Pump.
      Refer to: High-Pressure Fuel Pump (303-04A Fuel Charging and Controls - 3.0L EcoBoost/3.0L EcoBoost – Hybrid (BQ), Removal and Installation).
    5. RH coil-on-plugs.
      Refer to: Ignition Coil-On-Plug (303-07A Engine Ignition - 3.0L EcoBoost, Removal and Installation).
    • Disconnect the oil pressure sensor electrical connector.
    • Detach the wiring harness retainers.
    • Disconnect the center PCM electrical connector and wiring harness retainer.
    • Disconnect the engine harness electrical connector, retainer and position the engine wiring harness on the engine.
  1. Remove the wiring harness bracket bolt.
    Torque: 97 lb.in (11 Nm)
  1. Detach the wiring harness retainers.
    • Disconnect the wiring harness electrical connectors.
    • Detach the wiring harness retainers and position the wiring harness aside.
  1. Release the clamp and disconnect the vacuum hose.
  1. Remove the nuts and the bracket.
    Torque: 53 lb.in (6 Nm)
  1. Loosen the fasteners and remove the valve cover.
    1. Remove and discard the gasket.
    1. Clean the valve cover gasket groove with soap and water or a suitable solvent.
  1. Inspect the spark plug seals. Remove any damaged seals using the special tools.
    Use Special Service Tool: 205-153 (T80T-4000-W)  Handle. , 303-1247  VCT Spark Plug Tube Seal Remover and Installer.
  1. NOTICE: Do not use metal scrapers, wire brushes, power abrasive discs or other abrasive means to clean the sealing surfaces. These tools cause scratches and gouges which make leak paths. Use a plastic scraping tool to remove all traces of old sealant.

    Clean the valve cover mating surface of the cylinder head and engine front cover.
    Refer to: RTV Sealing Surface Cleaning and Preparation (303-00 Engine System - General Information, General Procedures).
    Use the General Equipment: Plastic Scraper
    Material: Motorcraft® Silicone Gasket Remover / ZC-30-A
    Material: Motorcraft® Metal Surface Prep Wipes / ZC-31-B
    Material: Motorcraft® Metal Brake Parts Cleaner / PM-4-A, PM-4-B

Installation

  1. To install, reverse the removal procedure.
  1. NOTE: Installation of new seals is only required if damaged seals were removed.

    Using the special tools, install new spark plug tube seals.
    Use Special Service Tool: 205-153 (T80T-4000-W)  Handle. , 303-1247  VCT Spark Plug Tube Seal Remover and Installer.
  1. NOTICE: If the valve cover is not installed and the fasteners tightened within 10 minutes, the sealant must be removed and the sealing area cleaned.

    Apply an 8 mm (0.31 in) diameter drop of Motorcraft® High Performance Engine RTV Silicone to the engine front cover-to-cylinder head joints.
    Material: Motorcraft® High Performance Engine RTV Silicone / TA-357 (WSE-M4G323-A6)
  1. Install the valve cover and tighten the bolts in sequence.
    Torque: 89 lb.in (10 Nm)

    Fastening the Seatbelts

    The front outboard and rear safety restraints in the vehicle are combination lap and shoulder belts.

    Insert the belt tongue into the proper buckle (the buckle closest to the direction the tongue is coming from) until you hear a snap and feel it latch. Make sure that you securely fasten the tongue in the buckle.

    To unfasten, press the release button and remove the tongue from the buckle.
